Stile collects several types of Personal Information about people who interact with us, both offline and online, or use our Services. The following describes the types of Personal Information collected by Stile.
If you write to us via email or one of our contact forms, for example when asking for assistance or making a sales enquiry, we’ll keep a record of that correspondence for future reference. The same applies to when you fill out one of our surveys or competition entry forms. We may collect your name, email address and other contact information through such communications.
Upon account activation, we request that you provide your school name as well as your email address, full name and password. We also usually request the contact details of a number of staff at your school, such as of your accounts department and I.T. support staff. We ask for this information so that we can personalize your account, better assist you with using the Services, and communicate to you about important Stile updates.
Stile provides a flexible interface for schools to collect a range of information, such as files, text, photos, videos and much more, from their students. As we are not specifically aware of the nature of this information, we treat it as Personal Information. Schools are responsible for ensuring that they have provide required notices and obtained necessary consents from the parent or legal guardians of students to allow us to collect and process such Personal lnformation. In this capacity we are acting as a service provider to the schools under FERPA and the California Consumer Privacy Act and other privacy laws. Please contact your school if you have any questions about the Personal Information being collected and if you want to make a request about your Personal Information. If we receive such a request directly, we will notify the school about the request and will act upon their instructions in responding (unless we are required to respond directly by law).
Stile may have access to student education records that are subject to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), 20 U.S.C. 1232g, et seq. and the regulations promulgated thereunder. This information is considered confidential and is, therefore, protected from disclosure, except with the consent of the student or in the case of a minor, a parent or legal guardian, or other person authorized to consent on behalf of the student, or in other cases permitted under FERPA.
To the extent that Stile has access to “education records” subject to FERPA, it does so as a service provider to educational institutions. We will only use such education records and Personal Information contained therein for the purposes of providing Services to users that access our Services under our contract with the educational institution. We will not use such information to market to the users except to the extent permitted by law or by our contract with the educational institution.
Except as required or permitted by law, or with consent as noted above, we shall not disclose or share such education records with any third party unless (a) such disclosure is permitted by the terms of our contract with the particular educational institution from which we received the educational records, and (b) the third party has agreed to maintain the confidentiality of the education records to the same extent required of Stile under its contract with the educational institution.
In the event any person(s) seek to access protected education records, we will only retrieve such data or information upon receipt of, and in accordance with, written directions from an authorized person and if allowed by law. If we receive a court order or lawfully issued subpoena seeking the release of such data or information, we will provide notification to relevant users along with a copy of the court order or lawfully issued subpoena prior to releasing the requested data or information, if allowed by law or judicial and/or administrative order.
If a student or his or her parent would like to request to access, modify, refuse further collection of, or delete a student’s Personal Information that we have been provided under a contract with a school or school district, please contact your school or school district with your request as we may not be able to respond to such requests directly under our contractual confidentiality obligations with the schools and school districts.
Stile is committed to protecting the privacy of persons less than 13 years of age (“child” or “children”) who use our Services. This policy explains our information collection, disclosure, and parental consent practices with respect to Personal Information provided by children and is in accordance with the U.S. Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (“COPPA”).
Stile does not knowingly collect Personal lnformation directly from any child without first obtaining consent of a parent or legal guardian or other person authorized to consent to such collection. Parents and schools may use our Services to create accounts for children or provide access to our Services that they and their children can use for educational purposes. In such cases, we only collect Personal Information from a child if we reasonably believe or have received assurances from the subscribing user or in the case of use under a contract with an educational institution, the administrator of that institution, that the child’s parent or legal guardian has consented to such registration and use of Services.
If Stile learns that Personal Information of a child has been collected through the Services without parental consent, then we will take appropriate steps to delete this information. If you are a parent or guardian and discover that your child has a registered account with the Stile without your consent, please email Stile at email@example.com and request that Stile delete that child's Personal Information from its systems.
Stile anonymizes the information collected by its Services and uses the information for research purposes. Stile does not (and will not permit any third party to) associate identifying information with research data.
Parents and teachers can review and delete the child's information at any time in the Services. Parents or teachers who have any questions about how Stile handles children's data may contact Stile by sending us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Stile doesn’t require your students’ real names to operate, though we believe it makes life easier for teachers. You have the option of entering pseudonyms for your students instead of their real names if you wish. Some customers provide their students with aliased numeric or random email addresses for use with online services, avoiding the need to store identifying information about them.
