Young people all over the world deserve a world-class science education. They need to deeply understand how to critically evaluate what they see in their social media feeds, and the tools to solve the big issues of tomorrow.
Every week, over 200,000 Australian students (and increasingly, American students) and their teachers use Stile’s web platform to explore and analyse the science behind the big issues facing us globally. That platform - a modern web application - was crafted by our in-house engineering team from the ground-up. We push updates and enhancements on a daily basis, and plan for it to remain under active development for years to come.
We need your help!
We’ve got an incredible, dedicated customer support team. Frankly, they know the ins and outs of how Stile works even better than our engineering team (and we built it!). They’re experts at understanding what customers need, and can resolve 95% of issues themselves. Where they can’t, it’s usually because it requires cleverly crafting SQL queries to dig something out of one or more databases... or it’s a bug!
That's where you come in.
As a member of our engineering organisation, you’ll have the important job of being the conduit between our customer-facing teams and our application engineering teams, solving as many problems as you can along the way. This might mean:
Channelling your inner detective: searching through logs from our production systems, looking at raw database tables
and perhaps even looking at some source code to work out the root cause of a problem. It might be a bug, or perhaps a
student telling fibs to their teacher about
the dog Stile eating their homework.
Where you’re sure it’s a bug, working out how to reliably reproduce it, then packaging that information up for one of the application engineering teams. We aim to keep Stile bug-free as a top priority, so that’s not just a bug report that’s going to disappear into a black hole - you can expect to be chatting to the engineer assigned to solve the problem within a couple of weeks (or minutes if something is really broken).
You might find yourself writing impromptu scripts to save our customer-facing teams a heap of time. You might be coming up with creative solutions using our existing internal tools. You’ll invest time in building lovley new tools that empower our non-technical colleagues, and automate your job.
We don’t need you to be an expert at anything starting in this role - we’ll teach you everything you need to know. We do need you to be eager to learn, have a genuine desire to help your colleagues solve technical problems, and generally make their work lives better with technology. And of course, feel the same drive we do to help kids develop into informed, reflective young citizens.
This role is a fantastic entry point to Stile’s world class engineering organisation. You get a kick out of helping others become more effective and efficient, with the help of technology.
You’re inclined to take the time to understand what the person or team is actually trying to achieve. You come up with plans to give them something that exceeds their expectations, and genuinely solves their problem.
If you have to do it yourself more than a handful of times, you’d rather figure out a way to automate it.
You are able to work out how to use new software very quickly.
There is a good chance you’re the ‘go to’ person for technology stuff amongst family and friends.
You enjoy really understanding how things work in an effort to find root causes.

As we’ve outlined above, your core responsibilities involve solving problems for our customer service and support teams, acting as the conduit between those teams and engineering. However, reporting to the Business Systems Manager, you’ll also get the opportunity to explore other areas of the business as you grow in your role. Here are some examples:
We work with our technical counterparts in government and school districts to integrate their systems with ours. This could be of interest if you’ve got experience with, or want to learn about, SAML-based SSO solutions or working with REST APIs.
Working with our Business Intelligence tools (we primarily use Looker) to help everyone in the company better understand our teachers and students through data. This could include building new reports or dashboards, right through to integrating new data sources.
Helping the sales and success teams manage their schools by developing custom parts for our CRM, Salesforce. It could mean anything from managing UI upgrades to writing and deploying new internal processes.
Become the office favourite by coming up with rapid solutions to problems cropping up in different teams, from operations, to content production, to finance. A recent example has included building a simple browser extension to automate language changes within our lessons. Another was a script to scan our thousands of lessons for links to external websites that no longer work. Automating manual, repetitive work makes you strangely popular!
This is an incredible opportunity to work as part of a small team of highly experienced engineers that are more than happy to share their expertise. No matter how much experience you’ve previously had, you’ll have the opportunity to learn and grow in a fun, fast-paced environment where you’re learning about a modern array of technology and techniques.
Just in case you’re wondering, this role does not include general IT support for the Stile team - a separate part of the business handles that.
This is a full-time, permanent position based in Melbourne (when lockdowns end). Once you’re settled in, expect to be coming into the Melbourne CBD office once or twice a week for collaboration and to spend time with your team. Outside of that, feel free to work from anywhere you see fit. If you want to mainly work from home, we’ll support you to do so. If you’d prefer an office environment and want to come in more often, we’ll make sure you have a desk to call your own.

Aside from your daily standup, and a few other meetings, you’ll have a great deal of flexibility over your day. Need to duck out for a few hours to spend time with the kids, or head to an appointment? No worries. Want to start work early on Friday so you can finish early? Sounds good to us! All we ask is that the flexibility goes both ways.
Balance. Regular, proper downtime away from the office is key to productivity and creativity when you’re working. We encourage everyone to plan out balanced work weeks, and take regular time off throughout the year.
Have fun doing it. We enjoy each other's company and doing non-work stuff together from time to time. We’ve got a dedicated team within the company that puts on regular events for us, from BBQs to Bubble Soccer and even an annual snow trip (snow sports optional)!.
